Tool As Partner VS Tool AS Shortcut

I am observing societal erosion—people using tech as an escape hatch from effort, accompanied by a breakdown in intergenerational empathy and civic responsibility. 

I use tech to create my Apps, I use AI for research and find that it does not really change what I’m going to write about but there is an ‘informed’ feeling to the work due to the knowledge aspect. 

I recorded music in the Analog world for 20 years so when AI music came along I thought what a great chance to not make hit singles but to use it to tell a story, using my own words.

I have no access to a symphony or chamber orchestra so I used it to tell the stories I longed to tell.  Now that is complete I am returning to my Analog Roots with an upcoming Audio Cinema on Maynard Dixon - back to another time and a slow world. 

The societal drift toward using technology to "get out of" life—outsourcing critical thinking, hard work, and emotional heavy lifting needs to be curbed.  Removing the ‘Grit’ and ‘Hard Yards’ is just putting off those life lessons- which the universe will just deliver to you in a different format sooner or later - so there are really no shortcuts but you like to believe that they exist. 

When technology is used to avoid effort rather than to amplify human depth, it creates a culture of convenience over responsibility. Convenience without conscience leads to frictionlessness in all the wrong places. This concept is powerful as I spend a lot of my time in a friction type state - it’s the creative clashing with the real- what many many people do not understand. Nowadays great artists pay the mortgage or rent, clean the apartment, have a foundational job besides the art/writing/music/etc. and are just being superhuman as there are no other choices.

I live in San Francisco not in the beautiful quiet tree lined outskirts but in the heart of Nob Hill the Tenderloin creeping up Taylor Street every afternoon.  My real-world observations are of young techies on scooters riding on sidewalks while elderly San Franciscans dodge them everyday. The AI crowd has no problem littering the streets - when you have headphones on and are in a conversation at the same time as your on social media where you toss your trash is the last thing on your mind.

The disconnection from older generations is in an EXTREME state and needs to be addressed.  

Everyone longs for the 1970’s and as I write my memoirs I am so lucky to have lived in that era.  We were all mixed together young and old, no boundaries- just together helping each other - which no longer happens and this is not an indictment of a whole group, but a symptom of hyper-individualism and technological insulation. 

Scooters on Pedestrian Sidewalks is a loss of presence and awareness. When people live in digital bubbles, the physical environment and the human beings sharing it—especially elders who embody memory and history—become invisible or treated as obstacles. 

Disconnection from elders is a disconnection from time and continuity. Tech promises speed and the "now," which inherently devalues wisdom, age, and slow growth.

A Call to Balance 

Technology can give us speed and power, but only human effort, character, and intergenerational respect can give it direction and soul. 

True AI Wisdom 

AI means recognizing that real wisdom cannot be a shortcut. No matter how smart the tool is, you still have to build character, put in the time, and carry your own weight.
